So I live in Mexico, but my dad and bros are going to San Antonio pretty soon, like this month July soon, to do some shopping. It's my chance to nab myself a new 64 GB iPod touch (I have an old yet cherished 2G), since getting one here in Mexico adds around 80 dollars to the price, I'm not kidding.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, before the WWDC, I saw a post on the front page about new iPod touch parts leaking, with a bigger screen etc.. here it is: https://www.macrumors.com/2012/05/2...ller-ipod-touch-front-panel-iphone-5-cameras/

SO it got me wondering if I should wait for a new iPod touch this year. They always get released in September right? And it'll probably get released along with iOS 6 right? Has that happened before? A simultaneous new iPod touch and iOS release?

I want a new iPod SO BAD, I mean I have apps that have become obsolete on my current iPod, and my chance is coming up really soon. But what is your opinion guys? Should I just wait till September to see if something is announced? Or get myself one of the current ones?? :(

Since the iPod touch basically hasn't been updated for two years I would wait, or try to get a better deal on a 4th gen one than paying full retail price.

I say wait. The current iPod touch wouldn't be much of an upgrade as its just as slow on iOS 5 as the 2nd gen is on iOS 4.

This is coming from someone who uses his 4th generation iPod touch a lot. Wait for the new one.

WOW really? So I'm guessing iPads and the iPhone 4S are noticeably faster? Is the general consensus that an update is due this year?

The current iPod touch has the processor from the iPhone 4, and only as much RAM as the iPhone 3GS. It's definitely due for an update, doesn't mean we'll see one for sure.

With my iPhone 4S, I never notice any lag with the interface or any stuttering as I play games or open apps. Its literally buttery smooth. My 3rd gen iPad is just as smooth.

My 4th gen iPod touch however... it lags for like 1-2 seconds when you tap on an app before it launches it. If you try to launch a big game like Infinity Blade, it may lag for like 4-5 seconds before launching the app and even then, you wont see the launch animation. If the memory is very low, the homescreen will lag constantly until you force quit anything that is running. Apps will crash often if you run them with low memory on the iPod. Big games like Infinity Blade will crash often unless you play them with nothing running in the background. Unlocking the iPod also is kind of laggy, especially from boot. You also won't hear the "lock" sound effect after locking the iPod for several seconds after it was locked. Pulling down the Notification Center screen can sometimes be laggy as well.

That has been my experience with my iPod touch 4G. I don't have it jailbroken and I use it extensively (traveling, gym, games, ect. I don't want to use my iPhone for those things). I have 45+ apps on it and I never let the onboard memory hit below 2GB.

I really don't recommend this iPod touch to anyone except maybe for non-techies with you clearly aren't. Its better to wait for an upgrade than to buy this and then regret later.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a 3rd gen iPod Touch running iOS 4. I have nearly purchased the 4th gen several times but am holding out for the Fall, hoping for a new release.

As for the cost, do you have a good friend or family member you trust who could purchase and ship the iPod Touch to you?

It's hard to predict right now. Last year marked a shift for Apple's mobile hardware, so we can't rely on previous iPod touch releases.

My guess would be that the new iPod touch will be released simultaneously with the new iPhone in October. I would not recommend purchasing now, it doesn't make sense to buy nearly two year old hardware.

That sucks for you because it's really bad timing. It's pretty sure (and when I say that, I mean really sure) that a new generation iPod touch will be released this September/October.

I don't own a 4g but I do have a 2g and while I'm really looking forward for an upgrade (as my 2g has long been outdated and it's barely useful now) I will skip the 5g as I'm trying to save some money to buy myself a MBA/MBP. I'm quite unhappy with Apple when it comes to the iPod touch. I mean, mine was working great until they forced me to install a newer version of iOS which did nothing to improve my iPod touch experience, only helped drain my battery faster and make it more laggish.

With all this people complaining about the 4g, how do you guys know that the next release will not still lack RAM? if we see what Apple did in the previous years, I think the next gen iPod touch will still be underpowered...

Thank you so much for your very descriptive explanation. I thought the 4G iPod ran the latest iOS completely smooth and perfectly. I thought the "laggyness" was something more akin to the older models. I'm definately waiting now. Thanks a lot for your help, very helpful. :)

THank you everyone who replied. You've all been very helpful. I'm definately waiting now, makes sense, and even more since today's story is news about the newest iPhone undergoing production. If a new iPhone is released... A new iPod touch will probably be released too right?

Ha I would probably be kicking myself if I bought a new iPod now and then a new one came out in september/october.

Many thanks everyone! ;)

Not necessarily. But if there is no new model this September you can always buy a 4G iPod Touch at that time...

For the price of a 64GB iPod Touch, you could purchase a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (ICS)or the new Nexus 7 (JB) tablet.

Something tells me it's no iPod Touch this year, but a iPad Mini.

Yeah, I will wait. "Better safe than sorry" right? haha The people who replied have just confirmed the iPod Touch is kinda outdated, so it gives me hope.. I mean, I think my new Apple TV has a better processor than the current iPod touch amirite? >_>

Thanks for the suggestion. But no, I need it to be an Apple device... I mean, I already have a ton of apps already purchased in the app store. (you're a sly fox Apple...)

If you are thinking about getting the current iPod touch DON'T. I have a 3G iPod touch which works fine but I wanted the white touch so I got it in december. Big mistake. First iOS 5 makes the thing run laggy as hell. I can't go a day without apps blacking out to the home screen due to low memory. Forget about playing games when even some normal apps are laggy. You scroll and there is that second delay before it moves.

Everything is fine though because Apple does not give a crap about the iPod. Everything to them is iPhone this and iPad that but they forget that if it was not for the iPod there would most likely won't even be around anymore.

They better release a new touch this year because I just can't take the laggyest of the current touch.

Apple said that the iPod Touch was their mobile gaming device, if ut wants the keep that title it will need a prossesor upgrade, ram upgrade (hopfully 1gb) and a graphics upgrade, Infinity Blade II laggs a little and its will need that upgrade for Infinity Blade III, I say wait because it will be worth it, but dont wait to long, if they dont mak an anouncement this year then buy the 4th gen and trade it out for the 5th gen when it does come out

True that, the Apple TV 3 has the new dualcore A5 chip, even through it has one core disabled its still faster
