In multiple previous posts, I have highlighted the difficulties I have had trying to get an Apple FireWire 400 iSight camera to be recognized and used under Sorbet Leopard. It has always, up until today, proven to be a non-starter. It typically either freezes the boot or simply fails to work.
Today, as I continue to optimize my new Air Quad environment, I once again tried adding an Apple FireWire iSight camera to the Quad. Much to my surprise and delight, it worked! Not that there is much you can do with it on a G5... and the iSight was a fairly low resolution device (640x480 I think) anyway - much better video call cameras available today. Nonetheless, I pulled up iChat, headed to its Audio/Video Preferences and there it was... a live real-time image from the iSight! It works!
I cannot explain why it has consistently failed all this time, but worked today. My guess is that it has to do with the order of software installations. Each time I have tried this in the past, it has been with a nearly "vanilla" Sorbet Leopard installation. Today, I am at the end of my configuration of Sorbet and my associated apps, not at the beginning. For the most part, everything I want installed has been installed. The last two adds were a Logitech mouse/keyboard set (S530) and the iSight camera. Both went in and worked flawlessly.
So, I cannot explain it, other than guessing at a software dependency, but I am really pleased that it is working!
