I'd like to batch rename photos from our recent vacation to the Jersey Shore and place them in chronological order. The problem I'm running into is that the photos were taken from different cameras...iphones and a point and shoot. Thus they have different naming formats. Because of the different formats, the iPhotos are listed together and the P&S photos are listed together. I want to merge the entire folder and have all of the pictures listed by date and time, ignoring what camera took the picture. Once sorted I can use Automator to rename the pictures, but my challenge has been getting the photos merged by their chronological order. Can I sort the photos based on the metadata and not the naming format of each camera?

Are you using iPhoto, something else or are they just in folder(s)?

If in iPhoto then I believe you can sort by any EXIF data (that is embedded by the camera at imaging time), Aperture certainly can but that is a basic requirement of a DAM.

If something else - who knows

If just in folder(s) then you are probably limited to the file name sort...
