sorting file folders

Hi, I just got my first Mac and I was wondering if anybody knows how to sort file folders so that subfolders appear first, and files appear second. My Mac seems to only let me do the opposite, where files appear first and subfolders appear next.

Also, does anybody know how to associate file extensions with applications?
