I'm trying to figure out how to sort files by size in Finder - on a MacBook Air running OSX 10.9.2.

I click on "view" - then "arrange by" - then "size." It groups the files into two categories - those 10 K to 1 meg and those 1 meg to 100 megs. Within each category they are alphabetical, not by size.

This is utterly useless! Does anyone know how to change it so files are actually sorted by size?

Thanks!

Where is the "sort" command? I don't see on in any of the tabs at the top. And the icon that used to allow one to sort files that was in finder with early versions of OSX seems to be gone in 10.9.2.

When I go to the finder help tab, and enter "sort by size" it walks me through the steps showing "sort by" in the "view" tab instead of "arrange by." Of course that's just the help instructions, so if I follow that, it doesn't really sort anything anyway. But help shows the command as "sort" whereas in reality it is "arrange."

If I go to the finder help tab and enter "arrange by size" it walks me through the same steps, but shows the same steps, but this way it shows the command called "arrange."

Finder's View Menu:
When you have a window open in list view shows "Arrange by" "Sort by" and a list of things, including size, to show in the window's view.

Do you mean, that in Mavericks, you can no longer sort a Finder column by clicking on the column header? That facility is in 10.8.x, for both ascending and descending order.

If you just want to sort files in a finder window, then turn OFF "arrange by", and just click the "date" header to sort, or click again to reverse the sort by date.

To be totally clear, this is the icon people are talking about:

I hate this thing too. That's where you turn it off.

Thanks, all. I got some additional info from facebook friends on this - there are actually two different things that are relevant. One is the arrange icon that Small White Car posted. The other is the "show sort options" towards the bottom of the view menu in the tabs. I haven't entirely figured out how the two relate to each other, but it's via the right mix of the two it is possible to get Finder to sort by size.

I think maybe the previous version of Finder didn't have two different commands that came into play? Or perhaps on my previous computer I never inadvertently changed the one that makes it group files by size.
