I've read a few reports that at some point the Apple Music app seemed to stop taking notice of custom sorting tags and I seem to be experiencing this still in iOS 12.x. I'm wondering whether it is an iOS (Apple Music app) bug that Apple might have fixed in iOS 13.
I have all my tracks tagged with extra "Sort Artist" and "Sort Album" tags so that I get the ordering that I want when viewing my stuff downloaded to my phone in Album or Artist view. When I look at my music in iTunes on my PC I see all the "Sort Artist" and "Sort Album" tags correctly set and the ordering when viewed in desktop iTunes (running on a Windows 10 PC) is correct, i.e. iTunes takes notice of the sort tags, but when I transfer new music to my phone the sorting tags seem to be ignored by the on-phone Apple Music app. Do people see this on iOS 13? If not then either it's a specific issue with my setup or it is something that Apple has fixed.
The sort of thing I mean by the way is that I have tracks for David Bowie's "Hunky Dory" album tagged with "Sort Artist" set to "Bowie, David" so that the artist sorts under "B" not "D" and I have "Sort Album" set to "Bowie, David, 1971" so that in Album view albums are grouped by artist in my desired alphabetical order and then for each artist's albums they are in ascending chronological release date order. Once upon a time that would have been pushed across to my iPhone and the album and artist would have appeared under "B" in both cases where I wanted them as specified by the sort override tags. Now if that is pushed to my iPhone the artist gets sorted under "D" despite the "Sort Artist" tag and the album under "H" despite the "Sort Album" tag.
