Sound defaults to internal speaker

I have a macPro 3.1 running 10.6.6. I have notices for a while that no matter how the sound was setup on the previous session apron reboot it always defaults to the internal speaker. I would like it to default to the rear jack. I have tried changing the sound panel prefs setup & also downloaded Soundsource but did not help. It stayed where I want in in windows 7 so it must be a software thing, what can I try next?

I had this same thing happen to me a long time ago, but I can't recall what I did to fix it.
