If I have something playing (video or song) on my mac (2010 mbp running lion) and plug in the headphones, there is a short pause in the sound. The same goes when plugging the headphones out. At first, I thought this was normal since the sound source has to change and didn't care that much. That was until it did this on my friend's old dell laptop running vista and there is no gap whatsoever! How come a computer that is (imo) a lot better than the other has this gap and the other doesn't? Also, is there any way to get rid of the gap? Thanks!

PS. sorry if this has been discussed, my googleing skills didn't help me find anything.

It's normal.
The delay is occurring because the Mac is switching the output. It sounds like your friends Dell is sending audio to both the headphone jack and speakers simultaneously (when plugging into the headphone jack, the connection to the internal speakers is severed, in a sense).
