Sound is distorted in bootcamp windows XP SP2

Hi all. I have recently installed Windows XP professional SP 2 with bootcamp and everything went well except for the fact that the sound is very very low quality. It is still fine from the OSX side, but when running windows everything starting with the login sound is distorted and garbled. I've reinstalled the drivers with relevant sounding names but that did not help. Anyone else had this problem or could help? Thanks.
