Sound mutes after reboot

Everytime I reboot (post SL and SL.1) my sound preference gets reset to mute. I saw a suggested fix on an Apple forum but the two files suggested for deletion are not among my library/preference/audio files. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, any ideas why my Mac keeps wanting to shut down my Safari after 30 minutes of inactivity?
