Sound not playing in Mail

I have a selected sound in .aiff format that I wish to play when I receive a mail.

In the preference pane I have selected the sound but when I receive an email it does not play,

I have tried it in MP3 format as-well but it still doesn't play, any suggestions?

I have also tried the the apple default sounds and these work but it seems to be the custom sounds that are refusing to work!
