Sound not working?

After I upgraded to Mavericks, the sound on my computer has not been working. It will play something for about half a second, and then it cuts out. This hasn't happened before, and I think it's either a problem with Mavericks itself or some piece of software. I have tried this with headphones and speakers and still get the same response. I also tried a PRAM reset, which still didn't work.

Edit: I have a mid-2012 13" MBP if that helps anyone.
