Sound on mute

I have an emac running tiger.

I just noticed volume is not working so I went into Sys Pref and checked out sound for some reason output volume is checked (the mute box) I can not uncheck it, it will not let me. I asked it to show volume in menu bar and each time I click that it just vanishes, from menu bar. It looks like volume is all the way up but nothing sounds. Any suggestions?

Have you tried restarting. It sounds like a minor preference problem. I get this and similar things from time to time on my PowerBook G4, although usually when using my USB Sound Sticks.

I did and that did nothing. I am running in safe mode. Does that make a difference? Any other suggestions?

I have the same problem. Have you gotten a solution. I am new to the Mac world, love everything else, whats up with the sound? :}
