I've noticed that when using GarageBand 4.1.1 to create ringtones for my iPhone, there is a very noticeable loss of quality when listening to the clip in my "Ringtones" tab in iTunes as opposed to listening to the clip before exporting out of GarageBand.

Is this due to the .m4r conversion, or am I possibly doing something wrong, because I'm not much of an audiophile, and the difference is really staggering.

I've noticed the same. Not sure what the reason is. Even when I listen to a song in iTunes then put it in GarageBand it sounds more "rich" in GB. Must be some kind of processing going on in GB.

It's so it sounds better coming out of the iPhone's little speaker - as if left untouched normal songs can sound awful at high volumes as ringtones, but Garageband processes them to help stop the distortion.
