I'm creating some beginner tutorials for recording sound on Macs. These are basic tutorials (how to connect a mic, find and configure inputs and outputs, etc.). The object is to teach singers and musicians with no computer recording experience how to exchange song files, and add their own tracks to the songs. It isn't about mixing, but it is necessary to use multi track software in order to hear the original track while recording a new one in sync.

One criteria for the software choice is that it must be free. It can be a free software provided by Mac, or a free open source software. I'm using Audacity for Windows, and Garage Band for Mac. The object is for the user to be able to get started on a bare minimum budget (preferably spending nothing).

It's been a long time since I've worked regularly on a Mac, so my questions are:

What other (free) software has Mac offered in the past with multitrack capability (if GB was not also on the system)?

If there has been anything else, are you aware of any online tutorials for them?

If there have been other programs, and there are already decent tutorials out there for them, I'd like to direct my users to them.

Thanks in advance! :)
