Sound repeatedly becoming imbalanced

I take it this is a long running common problem in OSX, as I've encountered it in both my laptop and iMac, at random times I'll notice the sound on my computer falling a bit to the left or right, and I'll check the sound preferences pane and under balance it will indeed show that the slider is slightly to one side, and every few days I'll go back to it and it will be sliding again all on its own, it is so annoying! Is there any sort of solution for this??
