Today, out of the blue, the sound on my 15" MacBook Pro (October 2008) started rising on it's own. Now, the translucent speaker notification will just blink. If I try to lower the sound, it sometimes fights me and then, even if I've muted it, the sound will just rise again.

Is this a virus?

It is not a virus, as there are no viruses for Mac OS X currently in public circulation, thus none exist right now.

Have you installed any third-party sound application? Can you control the volume via System Preferences > Sound > Output or the Menu Bar icon?

Have a look at Activity Monitor ( Applications / Utilities / ) and select All Processes and sort by Name to see what the culprit may be.

image below uses sorting by CPU as an example

Then select all processes via CMD+A, press CMD+C to copy it to the clipboard and paste the clipboard's contents via CMD+V in your next post.
