I got home today and went to turn up the audio to have it not do anything. When I hit the volume keys the icon appears on the screen but it doesn't move up or down. I can't move the volume control in the menu bar either. I've tried restarted and my system is up to date.

Sounds stopped working on 17" macbook pro

No, headphones(normal and usb) work fine. IN the sound preferences in the Output section there is only "Digital Out" Built-in Output when nothing is connected.
Edit: I was playing with the headphones and now there is a red light coming out of the jack.
Edit: It's off again... :-(
This is an issue with the optical drive and the light apparently comes from that. Just plug and unplug your headphones until it works - that is the only solution that I know of, perhaps Apple has a better idea.
