Down by the river
Our 2008 MBP ceased functioning a couple of weeks ago, and the diagnosis from my local Apple Certified Specialist is a logic board replacement. However the $643 price tag of the board has put me off.

Is it possible for a mere mortal to source said logic board from an alternate, easier on the pocketbook location?

I'd much prefer to replace the board than replace the entire unit.

There are some places where you can order a Main Logic Board unit, but it'll cost you about the same. Take a look at this for example: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/MacBook-Pro-15-Unibody-24GHz-Logic-Board-p-17550.html. I say go with Apple's quote or buy a new MacBook Pro.

Your model is defective, it has a chipset that was recalled / replaced for free usually. It may be out of the extended warranty but tell them you are aware it was part of an extended warranty situation and see if they work with you. Sometimes you just have to find the right specialist to help you.
