Discovered this today. The 4S has a infrared sensor firing every time the screen is on. It does not matter if Siri is off, auto brightness is off or you are not on a call. This seems like a waste of resources. I assume the CPU is being utilized for monitoring and power to fire the sensor. 5.0.1 has not changed this behavior. Any comments?

Old news and from various sources, "it's most likely using a minuscule amount of power and thus not the cause of battery issues in the 4S"

Does anyone know the purpose of having this working constantly? Seems very inefficient.

Given that people were reporting 5.0 battery issues with the Siri-less iPhone 4, I can't see how this would be the actual problem.

Because many 4S owners were reporting less usage time than 4 with the same OS under exact same usage.

The 4 does not fire this sensor each time the display turns on, only while on a call.
