A South Korean navy ship with about 100 personnel on board is sinking off the west coast near North Korea, possibly due to a torpedo attack, reports say.

The ship was sinking near Baengnyeong island, Yonhap news agency quoted navy officials as saying.

It also said the South Korean ship had fired shots toward an unidentified ship from the North.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but a rescue operation was said to be under way, Yonhap reported.

The incident happened late on Friday night local time.

Let's hope this is not the start of something… big

North Korea is participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

So is South Korea. They could theoretically meet as early as the semi-finals round (like either team will even make the knockout stage)

Lets hope it's just an accident of some kind. The last thing we need is a war in Asia. We've got enough problems to deal with.

^^^ war? = fifa world cup 10' ?? hmmmm luckily this is not the 2002 South Korea/Japan world cup.

I feel very sorry for the North Koreans. There government puts them through terrible abuse and keeps money back from them to poor into massive militery spending, while they starve. The US and the rest of the world has given them funds to get through food shortages, but the people on the street probably haven't been told this.
