Space bar exiting full screen

Hello. I have a 2015 rMBP and when I try to use the space bar to play/pause videos it will either enter or exit full screen. The only time that it will play/pause is if I click the window first. Can someone help me to figure out how to fix this? It happens only in safari, not in any other media player. Thanks!
