Even after re-booting I had this problem come back: suddenly in any application I'm using the space bar becomes invisibly engaged, scrolling down the page in Safari and Mail, adding spaces in TextEdit, etc.

Is this something that will require sending the computer in, or could there be a more harmless solution worth trying?

Use some compressed air underneath it. It may be dirty.

My first reaction is to say you got some liquid in there. Even if it was a drop of condensation from a cold drink you had over your keyboard for a second and it dropped in the perfect spot. My second thought would be a faulty or worn out keyboard. It doesn't happen as often but it does happen.

If after trying to dust it out the problem returns, don't hesitate to take it in if it's under warranty.
