Spaces problem

hi macromorers!

i have this very weird problem with Spaces. i have four Spaces setup - as i have for years now - and when i close an app it will automatically zoom back to Space 1. it's never done this until very recently.

sometimes it will happen if i'm in Space 2 - where i keep my web browser - when i have a modal and i click on one of the buttons, bam, i'm teleported back to Space 1.

i can't even predict sometimes when it will happen.

anybody experience this - know how to stop it (make it return to past do nothing behavior)?
