Sparse image and disk utility problem

I have 2 clones of my Panther drive. One made with CCC the other with SuperDuper. When I start up from my Panther install disk I cannot select either image from the file menu. The only time I can select the sparse images on the drive they are stored, is when I open disk utility from the already booted Panther startup drive and select disk utility from my applications/utilities foldr. When I try to verify disks for restore I get an invalid error message.
