speaker/handset volume really low

i've read that the iphone 3g is supposed to have very good audio quality for the speakerphone/handset. however, i can't really hear anything when i have it on speakerphone in the car or when i'm talking on the phone in the streets. is anyone else having these problems? the audio volume just doesn't seem to go up that high... is my iphone defective?

Did you remove the plastic wrapper that it came with?

i'm just wondering if anyone else has a similar problem with the volume. the phone isn't as loud as compared to other phones i've had.
