For a long time I used the built in speakers of my monitor. I liked not having the clutter of speakers. I just got a new screen and it doesnt have speakers inside so I will have to opt for some speakers. I have been going back and forth between getting a standard pair of speakers and even unconventional options like a sound bar or 360 degree bluetooth speakers. Can someone offer a suggestion what I should get if I want good 3d sound with minimal number of speakers.

I have a 32 in LG screen I use with my MBP 15" and the LG has no speakers - so I picked up 2 Bose Soundlink Micro speakers - very impressed - not expensive - wireless and rechargable = no cords

also great for travel

Budget normally dictates recommendations, maybe you can elaborate further on that please?

I personally am quite happy with Logitech speakers, and from time to time make use of my BT JBL speakers that can be joined together to make a portable 'ambience' of sorts.

looking for something that sounds good but isn't too large. I don't want to get bookshelf type speakers for sure. the bose suggested look interesting. Price is flexible.

I know that OP said bookshelf-type speakers are not desired, but I'll just mention the AudioEngine A5 powered speakers for others who might be open to such a solution. Best simple, not-"expensive" desktop setup I ever had.
