Speakers (external) on imac will not work !!

Please help my speakers are not working but if I plug in my head phones into them my headphones do work. If I unplug speakers from imac internal ones do work.
I had a soft ware up date yesterday tue 28 jan could that be the problem?
I also have just got in the last 2 weeks an airport express could that be the problem?

I use my headphones most of the time so can't remember the last time they were working but I am sure it wasn't that long ago

Yes When the speakers are plugged in it says headphones which it always says
and when unplugged it says internal speakers

Have you tested the speakers on another system or ipod?

After connect speaker to imac,
- turn speaker volume to low,
- turn volume on imac to high,
- and increase speaker volume.

Sounds like a speaker error, not a Mac error. Also, if the above methods fail, try a different 3.5mm cable?
