Hi all. I wanted to get speakers to boost the sound of music on the Mac. I see the prices vary but was looking to spend about $100 or so. Any suggestions?

The best sounding stereo speakers I have ever heard on a computer are the Klipsch 2.1 here at Amazon. List is $198, but I see they have some used sets for under $100. Really nice sound.

I'm looking at a 2.1 Klipsch vs. a 5.1 Logitech. Which would you all prefer?

No personal experience, but from what I've read people prefer the Klipsch 2.1 over the current 5.1 Logitech. Also, the Klipsch seem to have reliability problems.

Did you mean Logitech has reliability probs and I should go with the 2.1?

Yes, a few reviews said the sound quality was poor but I'm reading a few other reviews now.

I haven't heard the Klipsch or the Logitech that you mentioned but I think the Soundsticks III sound great. Most of the reviews that I read were positive, usually they were dinged for things like not having a headphone jack or over the touch sensitive volume controls, but generally received good reviews. You can return them if you don't like them (just pay the shipping cost) as they don't have a restocking fee.

I'd say they would be the ones I'd order unless another brand pops up in the next few days. Thanks.

Good choice. I have the same ones and for our price range, they're pretty top-notch.
They've played all of my music (10,000 song collection) flawlessly - only certain Dance/Electric songs suffered in the Bass section. Still, everything else - from Bach to The Beatles and on to Animal Collective - played just fine, great actually.

You don't buy a 2.1 Klipsch or a 5.1 Logitech. You buy specific model speakers from each manufacturer. I assume that the specific Klipsch system that you are considering has analog input. If you want 5-channel+subwoofer sound from a Mac, then you must use the optical digital [TOSLINK] port. Logitech sells one 5.1 system that features optical input. That is the US$399.99 Logitech Speaker System Z906. Reliability is simply not an issue. I purchased an earlier version of this system back in 2004. It is still going strong.

Lest you think that I am schilling for a specific company, I purchased my Logitech system with my Power Mac G5 at home. A year later, I purchased a Power Mac G5 at work. I purchased a 2-channel Klipsch system for my second Power Mac G5.

Friend, I will give you the real deal. ANY speaker will do GREAT. Speaker quality nowadays is a common thing, as long its a brand like creative or logitecht or etc...

Honestly, you need to pick a design that you like. Cause you will have the same speaker set for the next 20 years.

So, do you want 2.1 or 5.1? I like 2.1, and you mentioned getting a better sound for music, right? Then all you need is 2.1

So what its your Mac? There are many speakers out there, some have white glossy finishing, some have alluminum finishing and some have transparent glass. All these match some Mac at some time in history. I will give you a few speaker sugestions below:

and

Combine these two for a 2.1 system. I personally have the L3450 subwoofer and the controls are amazing. You can, I believe, pair any set of speakers to it. Regarding the L3800 speakers, I have the generation before and sound is amazing.

I also have these, amazing sound, but its out of stock

The picture doenst show color accuratly, the front is silver, while the sides are white.

http://www.amazon.com/Harman-SoundS...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322445421&sr=1-3

note that this one has silver standings for the speakers instead of black standings. You can find this at ebay for $60 in an auction if you read this fast....8h remaining....

In the end its up to you, follow your own intuition other then somebody elses desires...and I did not steal this, I said it first!
