What are the speakers on a MacBook pro like? Are they as good as the in built JBL/Harman speakers many pc manufacturers use?

Pretty decent for laptop speakers. Don't expect theater quality, but they do a decent job at stereo separation.

What about the MacBook air?

Can't speak to that. I'd suggest you go to an Apple Store or Best Buy and give a listen.

IMHO, the JBL/Harman speakers some laptop's include are simply fluff to compensate for the inferior OS on the laptop.

I can't hear anything in a store. It's too loud.

Just as crappy as any other laptop out there. I've never heard a single laptop actually sound good.

13" rMBP here, they're not the loudest ones around, but they surely might be the best sounding laptop speakers I've ever heard. Don't worry about them.

MacBook speakers are probably the best laptop speakers around. I regularly watch movies and series on it and the sound is always sufficient. For music, not so much (if you want good quality).

They sound great for quick youtube videos, but for music they are pretty unbearable when you're used to excellent headphones and car audio

the asus n53j had good sounding speakers for a laptop. but its also bulky as you can see in the pic up top of the keyboard.

a few HP laptops are sounding loud and good as well. wish the macbook had a bit more bass, but it is clear and sounds better than most.

Meh, nothing coming from a laptop sounds good to me, I do most of my listening on a set of Focal Chorus 836v or Grado SR-225e
