Speech recognition icon appeared. Can't get rid of it

On Friday, this blue and silver circle appeared on my desktop. I have figured out what it is, but no way to get it off my desktop. I have gone to system prefs>speech and made sure it was off. But I still have this annoying circle on my desktop.

Any clue how to get rid of it?
