i want to change my 5 years old SpeedTouch 510 modem

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/hardware/reviews/14-st510v4.html

to APE

http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/specs.html

i'm confused.they do have similar ports but i read somewhere that i need a modem with the APE?

my question: will the APE be a great substitute for the SpeedTouch 510 modem?

?

P.S. i have a DSL connection.

You'll need a DSL modem. The SpeedTouch is a modem/router combo. The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is strictly a router and needs a modem upstream.

Either contact your ISP and have them provide you with a DSL modem, or you can disable the DHCP server (routing) in either of the SpeedTouch or the AEBS and use them in conjunction with one another.

Disabling DHCP on the AEBS is rather simple yet disables the guest network option. Disabling the DHCP server on the SpeedTouch is beyond my knowledge. Try searching for your particular modem/router and "bridge mode" and see what comes up.
