Word doesn't spell check at all. In preferences 'Spelling & Grammar' is greyed out. How can I get it to work?

'Spelling & Grammar' is greyed out
I'm having the same problem. It was fine until I clicked on the "critical" update. I use a "language feature that allows me to switch back and forth from English and Italian and now I'm screwed!
