Spell Check in Office 2011 with older documents

The red line under misspelled works with new documents made in Mac Word 2011.

However,

when opening older documents made with an older version of Word, it does not work. Is there a fix for this?

sometimes word doesn't actually scan the document for errors unless you make a single-character change to the content of the freshly opened file. try that, and if that doesn't work i would re-save the file as a current .docx and go from there.
