So this is been happening for as many versions of macOS that I can recall, when I’m using messages, or mail, in macOS, the automatic spellchecking feature never works when I am composing a message. This is unlike messages or mail in iOS, where the spellchecking always works. I can find no way to fix this, I have selected all the options to enable spellchecking in macOS, and I still have issues where when I am typing something like “hello, I’m going to meet you at noon” it comes out as “hello, im going to meet you at noon”. It always fails the punctuation.

currently I’m running Big Sur, but this has happened on the last at least three or four versions whenever I’m typing messages on macOS where always have to go back and add the apostrophes or fix the punctuation.

In an app on your Mac, do any of the following:

  • ...
  • Ignore misspellings: Control-click a word, then choose Ignore Spelling. The word is ignored if it occurs again in the document (it will be highlighted in other documents).
  • Add words to the spelling dictionary: Control-click a word, then choose Learn Spelling. The word won’t be flagged as misspelled in any document.
  • Remove a word from the spelling dictionary: Control-click a word, then choose Unlearn Spelling.

Thanks for the link, but none of that works. If I want to type "I'm going to meet you" it fails to highlight or suggest anything or autocorrect the punctuation when I actually type Im. All the different menus and right clicking, nothing seems to work on the Mac. Not a single app on my Mac does this properly. This stuff should be way easier to figure out. Auto-punctuation isn't rocket science.
