spinning beach ball - itunes

I'm wondering if someone can help me on this. I get the spinning beach ball in iTunes while connecting to my iOS devices. Some devices are connecting via wifi and others are direct connected with the cable. I don't believe I've noticed it in any other area of iTunes.

mid-2011 iMac, 12GB RAM, Mountain Lion.

This was happening in Lion as well.
