I just upgraded my mid 2012 MacBook Pro from Maverick to Mojave to eliminate a problem I had with a CNC program I use. The upgrade eliminated the problem but now I occasionally get a black and white spinning wheel which I have never seen before. I have seen the multicolored spinning wheel and when I get that the computer is locked up until the spinning wheel goes away. This black and white wheel replaces the cursor and the program still works, i.e. I can click on different tools in the program and they work, it is just harder to tell exactly where I am clicking because the spinning wheel is larger than the cursor would be.
What is this wheel telling me and how can I prevent it?

Thanks
