I tried enabling the "split keyboard" but it doesn't seem do anything.
(General -> Keyboard -> Split Keyboard)

It looks identical to the regular keyboard.

Issue with iOS 5.1?

Edit: sorry, this is my first iPad and apparently I need to manually force a split once the keyboard is onscreen.

Take two fingers and swipe them in opposite directions across the keyboard. It will split. You can put it back together in the same way. I believe you can also move it up to the middle of the screen.

When you pull up your onscreen keyboard, the bottom right corner shows keyboard button. You must hold the 5 dashes on that button, and slide up. I'm sure there is a youtube video out there somewhere showing this.

Works on mine. The setting just enables it, still gotta switch when the keybd is visible. Press/hold the keyboard icon on bottom right of the keyboard and select Split.

Gotta crack the screen in half. Make sure you do it as close to the middle as you can otherwise it's going to be uneven.
