A dozen years ago, my wife and I shared a single id - call it husband@mac.com

We have since created wife@mac.com for her email but everything else is owned by husband. Contacts, calendar, notes, whatever. Husband is used across a laptop, 2 phones, 2 iPads, and a desktop. This is almost always fine until the system hiccups which happens every 4-6 weeks resulting in duplication of our notes, getting each other's messages, seeing each other's recent phone calls etc. I've had "geniuses" tell me it can't happen or that all I have to do is change various settings. Changing settings works until it doesn't - hiccups happen. I'm tired of trying to fix it.

So what I want to do now is set up wife1@mac.com and have it, and her phone completely divorced from husband@mac.com I'm sure Notes will be easy enough to handle as there must be 3rd party apps that I can share across as many devices as I want. The important items are contacts and calendar. If I get a new biz contact I want her to be able to use and see it. If she sets up an appointment I want to see it. This extends to all of our devices. Right now we can see everything everywhere.

How should I proceed?

Any recommendations for a cross-device notes app?

I would recommend setting up family sharing. It will create a shared calendar as well as other things, and you will have access to each other’s purchases via the purchased section in iTunes store/app store. Set up family sharing oma device logged in to husband@mac.com , and then invite wife1@mac.com. High Sierra and iOS 11 allows for shared notes, so simply share whichever notes you want via text or email.
