This is a bit of a long story but I'll try to condense it.

I was using an Airtag around my cat's collar. The cat got lost a month ago. We didn't get any hits until a few days ago. We've pinpointed it to the rooftop area of a nearby building that has a few small radio towers on it (it's a sports club building with an indoor basketball area, racketball courts, etc.).

Today I climbed up to as close to the top of the roof as I could (it's a tile roof that can't really hold the weight of a person) and couldn't connect with the Airtag. I can when I'm inside the basketball court in a single corner of the court that is just underneath where those radio towers are.

I'm now waiting on getting permission to fly a drone over this area (I can't because it's close to an airport so I need a certification, which takes days where I live) to look at the top of the roof. I'm also trying to get a roofer to go up and look as well.

Here's my question: is it possible something is spoofing the Airtag? The building was built in the 90s and I wouldn't be surprised if it's transmitting on some frequency that Airtags use. Are there false positives with Airtags? Can I be 100% certain that the airtag is actually up there?

Please, any help would be appreciated. I've been worried sick about my cat for a month now, and at this point I just want this torture to end.

airtags have a unique ID, and they generate secure codes that rotate, there's virtually no chance that an errant signal could do that.

You're talking about the roof, but there's no altitude information to base that on. Have you tried looking under the building? Like a basement or crawlspace?

Yep, Seinman has a good point - the AirTag could be in the basement. Me, I'd contact the building manager and let them know the information - most people are good enough that they'd give you a hand to look.
