I've had this for at least a month now... I figured it would be fixed by now, but maybe it's just me...
Audio on my system plays in browsers, vlc, flash videos, etc... But once I start Spotify - unless I restart - then the only way to hear audio from other programs is to keep Spotify playing, while muted. It's like Spotify is capturing the OSX audio device somehow and not releasing it for other programs.
Any ideas?

How are you playing Spotify, via the web or the MacOS app? If the App, what hardware do you have?
Sorry should have included this info in OP, but didn't realize it might be relevant. Native Spotify. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Latest 10.13.

Are you playing via internal speakers or an external device, such as a USB connection to a DAC and headphones/speakers?

Bluetooth connected speaker. Same thing happens using internal speakers it seems. It is likely Spotify app just being super buggy - I just don't know why everyone else isn't writing about their negative experiences with it. My experience with Spotify app on Android sucks too...

I have seen at least one app that messes up sound preferences. In my case I have to disconnect/reconnect a USB DAC to get sound and sound preferences working again. Any improvement if you toggle Bluetooth off/on?

Here's a bug that I reported against the Plex player Mac app:

If I am playing in the Plex Web Player via the USB DAC everything is fine. But as soon as I start the Mac Plex player app (still playing the web player) the DAC is deselected in Sound Preferences, the iMac speakers are selected and the Plex web player starts playing through those speakers. This happens just bringing up the app, nothing selected to play yet.

I select the DAC again, but the selection doesn’t hold and the iMac speakers are again selected. But there is no sound! I go back to the web player and the iMac speakers are selected and it now plays through the iMac speakers. I select the DAC but the sound still comes from the speakers. No sound is coming at all from the Plex App.

To get the DAC speakers working again I have to disconnect the USB DAC and plug it back in again.

In short, the Mac Plex player changes my playback selection to the internal speakers as soon as it is launched. It will not play through the USB DAC. At some point the App will not play any sound at all.
