Since yesterday my G5 is unable to connect to Spotify (error code 112). Is this the end of Spotify for PPC? Or could this somehow have been caused by me having begun using Spotify on a tablet..?

I had used Spotify on all sorts of devices, including tablets, last time I used the PPC version. I doubt that has any meaning.
Does the web-player work with TFF?

Apparently not. Trying to sign in I just get a blank page. But then I've never needed the web player... I may have tried it on Webkit, but it didn't work, I think.

So, do Spotify app and/or web player still work for other PPC users then..?

Just downloaded Spotify on Tiger to check...

Hey, you're right! I can't get in either! Same thing, error code: 112. (though it sees my local music)

All good things come to an end I suppose. On its own, PowerPC support until 2018 was a great feat.

R.I.P.

Fine, that's it then, I guess. Seems like others aren't using the app on PPC anyway... What about the web player then, are people using that on PPC? I tried logging in on Webkit and did get in, unlike on TTF, but yeah Webkit is not supported.

I just checked my Spotify app on my G4 Mac Mini and yep, it appears we might be done with using this version...

Though, last time we had a scare like this, it came back a few days later. Who knows!

:(
Just tried it, getting 101 and 112 alternating

Finally... we are left out alone by Spotify. Still, that was an extremely long time we could use this version

Well then i know what to do...
I will look into how to recreate @eyoungren iTunes4 setup to stream my own music collection over Internet.

I really like Spotify. They have a lot of music in their catalogue and I just paid for another month so I will miss to be able to fire that up from my PowerBook's but this is not the end.

The thread I have on this (iTunes 4.0) will contain a link to download the iTunes 4.0 app. But that link is now gone.

Download it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2hmag72m6p9hvt6/iTunes 4.0.app.zip?dl=0

The rest of the stuff in that thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/itunes-4-0-rises-again….2028499/ is accurate.

Definitely a shame this has lost support although they were good to keep it going for this long. They even had a link to it on their main site up until a couple of months back. I'm sure there were probably security vulnerabilities with the outdated code.

Here is the thing, does it really cost them any money to continue supporting PowerPC? Really, is it not just a matter of compiling their app in XCode to target 10.5 and for PowerPC arch?

The labor dollars per hour to do it. No idea how long of a process that would be but nothing is free. There’s always a cost.

Conversely if it was a zero cost, easy breezy game, wouldn’t it make sense to cast as wide a net as possible & include ppc boxes?

There’s obviously a cost somewhere or they wouldn’t ration their labor in this way.

I wonder if the Spotify API is publicly documented?
Then people could create un-official Spotify apps for unsupported platforms(like 68k MacOS 7.x/8.1 machines, or MacOS 9, OS X 10.5/10.4).
EDIT: Spotify does have a public REST API... Now if only someone would work on a selection of Spotify apps for ancient Macs.....

I have had an idea though, completely unrelated to Spotify, since some of the OS X components are open-source(OpenSSL, bash, OpenJDK, Darwin, XQuartz, CUPS, Apache and such), I wonder if it would be possible to compile newer versions of those components and come up with a DMG to install the updated versions? Since bash, OpenSSL, Java and Apache all have known security issues that were fixed in newer releases, it would be a good idea to look into this, because it's not like Apple will release an update.

It's too bad that despotify hasn't been updated in years and no longer connects with Spotify. Would be good to see a revival of that project, especially for PowerPC so we still have the option to use Spotify in some capacity.

Sadly it is not... Newer versions of Spotify rely on new libraries and features of OS X, which are not present in 10.5
But - I think it wouldn't be too complicated to update the old app tolet it connect again to the servers
