Spotify today launched its holiday discounts, giving new users three months of Spotify Premium for $0.99, after which they'll need to pay the traditional $9.99/month subscription cost or cancel their account beforehand. The sale is similar to discounts launched in years past, with Spotify encouraging new users to sign up to the music streaming service over the holidays.

This year, there's an additional deal for those who have signed up for Spotify Premium, but then left the service at one point in the past. Specifically, if you didn't have an active Spotify Premium account as of October 21, 2017 -- meaning you canceled your account before that date -- you can return to Spotify and get three months of the service for $9.99. Unfortunately, there isn't a deal for paid subscribers who have stayed with Spotify.

Three months of Spotify Premium that gives you access to millions of songs on demand, ad free, and high quality audio, for less than a dollar? That is what music fans can expect this season as Spotify announces two of its biggest deals of the year. Whether you are curating a list of your favorite holiday-themed tracks or compiling a playlist of the hottest songs of the year for an upcoming Holiday party, these offers will undoubtedly warm up your mood this season.

- First-time Spotify Premium users can receive three months for just $0.99 if they have not previously provided credit card information or used a 30-day trial.
- Spotify Premium users that did not have an active account as of October 21, 2017 can receive three months for the price of one: $9.99.
If you're interested you can sign up for Spotify Premium on the company's website, and you have until December 31, 2017 to take advantage of the offers. For new users, Spotify said it will check to see that you have not previously provided credit card information or used a 30-day trial of Spotify Premium in order to grant the three month price at $0.99.

This is what bugs me about these companies all the good deals are for new subscribers. Apple Music is honest always offers a 3 month trial all year around for new subscribers and that is it once you use it no more trial.

Other services the worst is Google you spend a mint for a phone and they don't even give you the free Play Music promo is you are a current or cancelled the service recent. However if you call up support and beg they saying why do new subscribers get all the deals can give you free months if you get the right CS. I done it.

At least Spotify is giving those who signed up before October 21st three months for $9.99 which I might just grab.

This is about user acquisition. They're losing money for the 3 months during this deal - they're hoping to make it up by enough people staying around and paying $9.99/month afterwards.

If you're already a user, they gain nothing by giving you the deal. If it irritates you enough as a current paying user, you could quit, but where are you going to go?

I'm a paid user. This exact deal 3 years ago roped me in literally an hour before the New Year. I don't mind them offering this deal to other people and not me.

Glad to see they are including former subscribers in the deal this year. While I'm a former subscriber, Apple Music has been great since I switched from Spotify.

Not knocking Spotify or anything (really liked their service when I had it), but I see them getting bought by another company in the next several years.

Apple Music has put the hurt on them. Need to do something to get people to upgrade to their paid service and keep growth coming.

This is barely a deal. Without the former subscriber caveat, they have this deal almost monthly.

That is what I am saying. Former sub's can get 3 months for $9.99 and I caved in and got it. Play Music gives you nothing for former or current sub's especially when you buy there overpriced phones and speakers.

That isn’t true at all. Spotify continues to grow at rates higher than AM, and it’s because the service is much more robust. AM is a placeholder so that Apple remains relevant. It is in no way the better service, IMO

This is true, yet they have not made a single dime of profit with all that growth. They still depend on investments from others in order to just keep the service operating. Eventually those cash cows will quit investing. Apple has already reported profit with their music service in the conference calls, but they could in fact use Apple Music as a lost leader, which is something Spotify can't do. The fact is Apple Music has impacted Spotify in that the 20 million paying subscribers Apple has they could have themselves. I was a Spotify subscriber and I now have Apple Music and I find it just a robust as Spotify. One example of that is radio stations that are professionally programmed. Spotify by comparison is just meh!

I’m the opposite side of the coin, I’ve used both services and am continuously impressed with Spotify’s algorithm. Their Release Radar, Discover Weekly, and Time Capsule playlists are wonderful, and I’m always discovering new (to me) music. Whereas when I had Apple Music, I didn’t enjoy the user interface *at all*, and their playlist algorithms would just generate music I was already into, or artists that were nowhere close to what I liked.

Apple Music also has the advantage of being the default streaming app, coming preinstalled for all iPhone buyers. That considered, IMO their 20 million isn’t actually all that impressive.

I don't really think Apple is trying to impress you or anyone else. We all know Apple is all about "PROFIT". I am sure that Spotify wishes it could just break even one quarter.

There is no doubt Spotify has some great aspects, but I have never required it to impress me. I just prefer all the playlist and stations on AM. Heck even Slacker and Pandora has better stations than Spotify for mainstream music. I have also found much exposure to music I've never heard. AM has some very eclectic and deep playlist which I have really enjoyed. But hey long as you are happy with Spotify that is great, but to say that AM is a placeholder to stay relevant is just NONSENSE.

If it’s nonsense, why weren’t they first? They only created AM once Spotify had millions and millions of users. It makes them money but that isn’t the reason AM exists. Google Play quickly followed too. Each giant realized they needed their own streaming service...to compete and stay relevant.

Spotify is the only streaming service that is NOT in the business of making phones. Google and AM have different reasons for their service, Spotify can focus solely on their product, nothing else. That’s why it’s better.

Apple has been in the music business for many, many years, long before there was a Spotify. In fact their digital music sales for many years held records. They pushed the record labels to offer legal digital sales and downloads. Initially encrypted, but later unencrypted. Apple has a rich (no pun intended) history working with music labels and offering music. They started Music-Match which allowed us to stream the music we owned and purchased. Apple then bought Beats Music Service which opened the door for them to get into full streaming music service. Your so called logic that because they were not first means it is a place holder to stay relevant is total and utter nonsense.

You are correct that Spotify doesn't make phones, but just focusing on their streaming service while it has netted them 50 million paid subscribers, it has not made one dime of profit. Profit may not be an indicator of a service quality, but it certainly required for a business to survive long term. It is pretty mind boggling when you consider the competition has far less subscribers and are making a profit. Eventually they are going to have to figure out how to become profitable or be bought by someone that will. Sirius XM is in every car sold today and yet they only have 20 plus millions subscribers and they are making profit. AM 20 million subs and they are profitable. This says a lot about this Spotify management team that you claim is so focused on just their product which in your opinion is better. 20 million AM and 20 plus million SiriusXM subscribers say different. LOL
