Spotify is rolling out a new direct messaging feature that allows users to share music, podcast, and audiobook recommendations directly within the app. Messages is launching this week in select markets for Free and Premium users aged 16 and older.

The feature integrates into Spotify's existing sharing functionality - tap the share icon while listening to content in the Now Playing view and select a friend to message. Recipients can accept or reject message requests, and they can respond in kind with text and emoji reactions.

Messages are limited to one-on-one conversations between users who have previously interacted through Spotify features like Jams, Blends, or Collaborative Playlists, or those who share a Family or Duo plan. All shared content is stored in a Messages inbox accessible through your profile picture.

Spotify says conversations that take place over Messages are protected with industry-standard encryption and subject to the platform's existing content moderation policies.

The feature isn't meant as a replacement for sharing Spotify content over Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and the like – the company wants users to continue using these social media integrations, with Messages on Spotify designed to complement them.

It's the second new Spotify feature to launch in as many weeks, following the introduction of a mixing feature that allows Premium subscribers to create seamless transitions between playlist tracks.

How about launching hi-fi already. I’ve been going more and more to Apple Music because of the atmos offerings they have. I’ve been a Spotify guy for over a decade, what are these guys waiting for?

There’s probably just the one lonely guy sitting in a back corner at his desktop PC with a ageing CRT running Windows 7 slowly using ffmpeg to convert the Spotify catalogue to FLAC album by album. It’s gonna take him some time to get through /s

In all seriousness, I can’t see any reason it should be taking them so long bar having to replace their entire source library with high res files - maybe they originally only sourced compressed files from labels to save on storage space?

Why do I need to be able to DM someone in a music app?
I’m curious if this will end up being a way for teens to circumvent parental controls on external communications during certain hours.

Spotify’s popularity might boom from such a seemingly trivial move.

Edit: IDK if they have imposed limits within the messaging feature so if it doesn’t replace texting/iMessage it may not be ideal. I follow a few people on Apple Music but I’ve never thought to message them through it. I just view/borrow from their playlists from time to time.

Finally! I remember always seeing my friends' music feed in the earlier Spotify days. Came back to it this year and not only is that much harder to find... I can't even share a song with a friend ON Spotify? I have to do it externally through iMessage or an Email!? Glad this is getting fixed finally.
