Spotify has launched a redesigned Apple TV app that the company says has been "rebuilt from the ground up for a faster, smarter, more visual experience."

The new features include a brand new, refreshed design for tvOS 26, as well as two formats previously exclusive to the mobile version of the app – video podcasts and music videos.

The ability to watch music videos is still rolling out in the U.S. and Canada, but it has already expanded to 97 countries around the world, so everyone should have it soon.

Users should see a "switch to video" prompt that appears when a song being listened to also has an associated music video. Video versions of podcasts work similarly, with the added option to change playback speed.

The updated app also offers remote control via Connect, lyrics, Spotify DJ recommendations, seamless playback, and queue management.

Note that if you wait for the new version of the app via automatic updates, you won't see it until mid-November, so you'll want to download it yourself via the App Store.

It does seem Apple is catastrophically behind the times again when it comes to video podcasts.

Personally I feel it was a mistake to move away from iTunes, or a single media app. Both Apple’s biggest competitors in this space, YouTube and Spotify, combine media into one place and are marching ahead meanwhile with Apple you’ve got a mixture of apps and websites, some on some platforms some not on others. Yet again completely lacking vision.

Yeah, I'm sure Taylor Swift is at home right now crying in her soup. Spotify has the largest base of listeners.

If you walk into a Costco, do you boo-hoo for the manufacturers who are forced to sell their products much lower than anywhere else while Costco rakes in huge profits? It's because Costco sells quantities much higher than anyone else. Same with Spotify. No one is holding a gun to the artists heads forcing them to put their music there.

Finally! My toddler for some reasons hates when I'm playing music and starts to cry but but but if its a music video then it's a-okay and I had to keep switching to YouTube instead of be on Spotify all this time.

No? I don't really see why it matters if all media is in one app or spread across multiple apps. I prefer to have my music in Music, podcasts in Podcasts, shows and movies in TV, etc. I don't need every app to be everything.

I feel Apple would be a bigger player in this space. Having a single location to go to top listen to Podcasts, watch Podcasts, listen to music, watch music, hey watch TV. There's lots of cross over between the different mediums and you'd just have to type in one thing in your browser and it's there.

For example I'm currently working on my Windows work machine. I use Apple Podcasts but that exists only in the browser, not as an app like Apple Music. So I go to the strangely non-advertised podcasts.apple.com and log in. But say I want to watch a podcast I can't. It's all over the place so I usually just give up and go to YouTube.

Say iTunes still existed I could just go to itunes.com and it would all be there, or download the app and it would all be there. Simple

No artist is being forced to have their music on Spotify. If they don't like Spotify, they can pull their music. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Deerhoof, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, etc. have all recently pulled their music over different reasons.

I mean, I think you answered your own question: Apple doesn't create their services or design their architecture for Windows users. We can debate whether it's the correct way to handle things, but Apple wants you in the walled garden. Why would they spend time and money building/maintaining a podcasts app/an everything app for Windows when they could spend that money convincing you to just buy a Mac?

Costco's prices aren't "much lower than anywhere else." I routinely buy things from other retailers because they're less than Costco's.

And FYI, Costco rakes in huge profits on membership fees. Roughly 70% of their profit comes from membership fees. Meanwhile, their gross margins on products are around 12%.

Spotify isn't operating in much different ways than others.

This is basically how it works:

Spotify pools the subscription and ad revenue into a single pot and distribute it pro rata based on the streams of the artist vs total streams on the platform for all artists together. The more streams you get, the bigger the slice of the pie you earn. The streams per dollar earned is just a rough number based on this. They keep 30% off the top for themselves, and the remaining 70% to the rights holders which may be labels, publishing, artist, etc. Those terms depend on the individual deals an artist has.

So, for example, if you have more individual streams for your revenue, you will pay less dollars per stream. There are mechanisms like that in play that need to be taken into account. And also, of course, what deals an artist strikes with their labels. Often, people only look at that dollars per stream number and judge streaming services on this alone when it in practice depends on portfolio size/breadth and revenue.
 
It's bad enough that Spotify are terrible at compensating the people who supply the content that drives their subscriptions, but now on top of that they're perfectly happy to let a deluge of AI generated slop flood their catalogue too.

They can polish the turd with a shiny new look, but it's still a turd underneath.
 
No profile support and Connect only appears when you load up the app on the TV.

But hey, at least visually it looks better and is on somewhat par with the Android TV version.

iTunes has been broken up on the Apple TV UI since it was first introduced as front row in 2005.
And on iOS since 1.1 on the iPod touch, 3.2 on the iPad and 5.0 on the iPhone.
 
I just what the Music app on the Apple TV to be able to switch to the music video when available automatically, similarly to Spotify... I know there are music video only playlists, but that's not what I want...
 
Freaking FINALLY we get the other features that every other platform has had for a long time. Never too late, I guess?
 
Spotify is paying Joe Rogan millions to peddle conspiracy theories to incels.

Whoever is using Spotify is rewarding behaviour like that.
