Spotify has upgraded its family plan to directly match Apple Music's offering, with up to six Premium accounts per family now available for $14.99 a month (via The Verge).

Spotify says users under the family plan will receive their own separate premium accounts and have full access to Spotify's library of songs and videos. Existing subscribers meanwhile will automatically be upgraded to the new plan and should receive a lower bill in the next month. The plan rolls out globally today, except for users of the music streaming service residing in Canada.

The move follows in the footsteps of Google Play, which matched Apple Music's family plan in December.

Earlier this month Spotify claimed it had experienced a faster pace of growth since the launch of Apple Music, reaching 30 million paying subscribers compared to the 20 million it had when the rival service launched last June. In April, Apple claimed 13 million subscribers, up from 11 million users in February.

At the beginning of May, Apple introduced a 50% discount for all student subscribers to Apple Music, offering those eligible a $4.99 per month deal. Apple Music is widely expected to see a design overhaul in time for WWDC this year, due to be held June 13-17 in California.

Felling the pressure. Yes, yes, I know Spotify still have many more million subscribers but the gap is closing fast.

This is great news! And a bit bad for Apple - their heavyweight competitor now has something that initially set Apple apart, just after Apple played catch-up for students.

Nimble and aware, Spotify continues to lead. Apple may be the wealthiest, but they're blinded by the narcissism they're afflicted with.
Apple should have bought Spotify in their infancy. Spotify are leagues ahead of the competition. Love how Spotify works seemlessly over all devices and any device can control another. Fantastic! My iPhone can control Spotify on my Mac Mini. It's fab!

You do realize they're FOLLOWING Apple and Google in this case, right?
Only in pricing. Apple are miles behind Spotify.

Hmmm. I prefer Apple Music, I can usually get a fair discount on iTunes credit. But the Spotify family plan would be a bit easier pooling some randos together and share a sub than Apple's family plan.

I loved Spotify but managing my own uploaded music was a PITA.

Wait - you can upload music to Spotify?

I have a lot of music that I currently sync to all my devices manually because I didn't know you could upload to Spotify. How do I do that?

Also, this is great for anyone with 3-6 people on their Spotify account, as it's now $5-20 cheaper. Makes no difference for me and my wife though... We were paying $15 before and will still be paying $15.

How is Spotify so much better than Apple Music?

You can, but it isn’t any good. You can import your local music into the Spotify application on your Mac and then you just have to add the songs that you want to upload to a playlist. There is method to upload your entire library at once though. Unfortunately also, songs you add to your playlists will not appear among your music library on your other devices, just the playlists. It was such a pain to manage that I went back to Apple Music after all.

I don't remember entirely because I switched to Apple Music as soon as it released so it's been a while, but I think I remember creating a playlist for my own music on the Spotify for Mac app and syncing that to my phone.

My own uploaded music couldn't be mixed with music I had saved from Spotify so I couldn't make playlists that included both. And sometimes some of my uploaded music would become grayed out for no apparent reason. It was very frustrating.

See I have a problem with your comment as I thought it was BS that spotify waited this long to match their pricing. Spotify was all about "Yeah. We'll match the pricing for the family plan of course!" AS SOON as Apple Music dropped. Call me salty but I waited months for the price drop when I eventually just had to go with Apple Music begrudgingly.

I think it was greed and narcissism on Spotify's part that they dragged their feet on the price drop to try to squeeze as many pennies as they can till the last moment.

Given past prices for music - I think $10 is really fair knowing that you can listen to any music (with few exceptions) you want. What's acceptable to you?
It shouldn't be $10. Especially not with 6 accounts having access for $15. It also shouldn't be as expensive as Netflix.

I would do what Tidal does. Offer a discount for 6 months. Or even a year. But $10 a month for a single user is too much IMO.
