Spotify users can now search for songs by lyrics, following an update to the streaming service's mobile app (via 9to5Mac). Spotify designer Lina shared the news on Twitter.

The feature is integrated into the main search function, which now returns playlist, song, album, and matching lyric results.

The ability to search by lyrics is a welcome addition to the service, especially for times when you know a phrase or chorus line but don't know the name of the song. Spotify is late to the game though – Apple Music subscribers have been able to search by lyrics since 2018.

Earlier this year, Spotify also introduced a real-time lyrics feature, thanks to an agreement with lyrics provider Musixmatch. The feature allows listeners to follow the lyrics to a song or sing along in real time.

Why does it suggest a cover by Placebo (a band that hasn’t been popular in almost 20 years) above the original classic by Kate Bush?

Kate Bush probably has the better royalties deal, so they earn more through people playing the Placebo version.

I wish her team also shipped the feature to exclude playlists from our music taste profile. Just because of the 'sleep' playlists I put on at nights, my entire Discover Weekly has turned into zen funeral home muzak. Worse, it's been a ticket since 2006 but deprioritised as "not right now". The whole attitude of shipping features "we think the user will love" instead of features "the user is bloody asking for" has really gotten on the nose during the past few years.

What we need is an Apple TV app or a standalone Apple Watch app but not such a useless feature. Stop wasting investors money and bring us what we are asking for since years!

Very good point! So scary the whole thing, I never let anyone use my Spotify account.

Doesn’t really work.
tried « I’d make a deal with god and get him to swap our places »
Nothing. I’m sticking with Google

Now all we need is Search function added to Apple CarPlay , they actually ran a trial for a few weeks early last year (2019) and then deleted it with an update.

this is the only true missing function of Spotify I can see.

Tried this 3 times and useless.

“I’ve got a ticket to anywhere” Fast Car - nothing
“Made a deal with God” - nothing

This would be a useful feature if it worked.

Spotify is becoming, much like Google products, bloated and slow. I actually think Apple Music (since the iOS 14 refresh) is now a superior service; recommendations are fantastic, radio is brilliant, Library is great and the UX is finally in a good place.
