So i've decided to really start using spotlight, but i'm having some obnoxious issues.
I've tagged files for school marked with things like "school" "work" "labs" etc.
The problem is that whenever i try searching for something, i get a bunch of results that are like "index.xml.gz" and "pkg.info".

I've tried messing with the security settings and blocking it from searching certain folders (library, system folders, basically anywhere that had files i didn't need to access), and the problem still exists.

Does anyone know any way to get rid of these mystery files?

It is possible it is still pulling data from the previous database. You might have to do a re-index of all the places you want to search and none of the ones you don't.

This article (and several others) on macosxhints.com was very helpful to me with spotlight problems. Link

Hope it helps.
