Spotlight index apps only

New to Spotlight.
I only want to use it as an application launcher. Can I stop Spotlight from indexing everything else? Is this what the privacy setting is for?
Been googling this for the last 40mins. Elusive answer.

Yes, you can use the Privacy tab to exclude all other folders and HDDs.

But what about Alfred or Quicksilver as application launcher? That way you can still use Spotlight to search for documents.

Im not a very heavy app user. I like command+spacebar "sa" enter and Im in Safari, etc. Just the basics.

Are there benefits to the third party apps for this use?

Oops missed that part.

I have been reading that Spotlight indexing can slow things down greatly. In the past few years Ive had my mac Ive only ever utilized spotlight to find docs once or twice. Just figure, may as well cut out the indexing.

Any thoughts on indexings affect on speed?
