Go to System Preferences, Spotlight in the top right corner. Make sure that everything is checked under the Search Results tab, and nothing is in the Privacy tab. If find everything checked and nothing in the Privacy tab, and its still not searching. Add your Hard Drive to the Privacy tab, Close System Preferences, then go back and remove the Drive from the Privacy tab, in which it should start indexing.

Also, are to clicking on the spotlight icon in the top right corner of the screen, or the spotlight search that is in the top right corner of every Finder window.
